Mallorca is also known as Majorca. It is an island which is situated in the Mediterranean Sea. It is the biggest island amongst the Balearic Islands archipelago in Spain. Palma is the capital of this island which is the capital of the autonomous community of Balearic Islands as well. These islands were an autonomous place of Spain from 1983. The Cabrera Archipelago is merged administratively with Mallorca. The national anthem of the island is La Balanguera.

The name of the island comes from a Latin word insula major which means larger island and later from Majorica was is called the larger one as compared to the word Minorca which means smaller one.
The island has a long past of seafaring. The Catalan school or the Majorcan cartographic school deals with a collection of navigational instrument makers, cosmographers and cartographers who flourished in the island and somewhat in mainland Catalonia in the 13, 14 and 15 centuries. The cartographers and cosmographers of the island established breakthroughs in the cartographic techniques like the "normal portolanchart",that was developed for the navigational use as well as the plotting through the compass of different navigational routes which are required for discovering the New World.
Towards 2005, there were more than 2400 restaurants on this island in accordance with the Majorcan Tourist Board. They ranged from the little bars to full big restaurants. Almonds and olives are the common diet of Majorcan island people. Other food items which are preferred by the people in the island include sweet pastry ensaïmada, arròsbrut(saffron rice cooked with chicken, pork and vegetables) and sobrassada which are widely eaten.
